RESEARCH INTERESTS
Research Overview
In my research I address a range of social demographic phenomena (migration, fertility, and employment) and their intersection with processes of social change and social mobility. One area of research that I am involved with addresses the intersection of fertility and economic activity in developing societies. In analyzing the post-birth economic arrangements of families and individual women in the emerging market economies of Vietnam and China, I explore family economic adaptations and the importance of labor force participation in the lives of mothers in developing societies. The second focus area of my research, also being conducted in Asian settings, and Thailand in particular, examines rural-urban migration and associated mobility processes, such as return migration and housing mobility. I am particularly interested in viewing migration as a force shaping urbanization in developing societies, and as a "socially embedded" process that is informed by local social contexts (such as migrant enclaves and workplace settings) and by multiple layers of social ties that may both lend support to migrants and/or place claims upon their social and economic resources.
