RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Bench's research activities have focused on the areas of criminology and deviance. More specifically, he has conducted research on a wide range of stages in the criminal justice process including pretrial services, bail, arrest, prosecution, sentencing, and corrections. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards from state and federal agencies including: the National Institute of Justice, the National Institute of Corrections, Bureau of Justice Statistics, Department of Commerce and the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice.
Dr. Bench consults with corrections departments throughout the country
on issues related to objective prison classification systems for the National
Institute of Corrections. Dr. Bench is also employed by the Utah Department
of Corrections as a Research Consultant in the Bureau of Research and
Planning. Dr Bench joined the faculty in 1997 where he teaches courses
in criminology, juvenile delinquency, deviance, courts and corrections,
and research methods. He is currently the director of the Criminology
Internship Program.
