You must apply to both the University of Utah Graduate School
and the Department of Sociology.

Graduate School Application forms and instructions are available at the Admissions Office web site (www.sa.utah.edu/admiss). Select "Graduate" from the menu at the left. The most complete set of instructions is included in the printable application. You should read the instructions carefully before completing the printed form or applying on-line.

Graduate School policies, admission policies, current tuition information, and important dates can be found at the Graduate School web site (www.utah.edu/graduate_school).

The Department of Sociology cannot consider applications to the department until all Graduate School admission requirements have been met and the Graduate School has sent a referral to the Department.

Application to the Department of Sociology -- Deadline 01 April

Applicants are expected to have completed an undergraduate major in sociology or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Except in extraordinary circumstances, students may enter the program only at the beginning of Fall term.

• Department Application Form (sent by applicant):
  Be sure to complete both pages, sign, and date. This form is available as a PDF document -- please print.
  
  
• Statement of Purpose (accompanies application):
  A brief (three-page maximum) statement outlining your present sociological interests and goals, your academic and career interests, and any additional information that might be helpful in evaluating your application.
  
  
• Official Transcript(s):
  Request one official transcript from each college and/or university (except the University of Utah) attended, regardless of length of attendance. Official transcripts must be mailed directly from the institution to the department.

Note: a set of transcripts must also be sent directly to Graduate Admissions (see Graduate School application instructions).

• Three Letters of Recommendation:
  Request letters from three endorsers. Endorsers should be able to speak of the applicant's academic ability and promise as a graduate student. If the applicant has a baccalaureate in sociology, one of the endorsers should be a faculty member from the applicant's sociology program. Endorsers should not be relatives, personal friends, or religious leaders.
  
  Each endorser should be sent a department Personal Reference Form (two pages). This form is available as a PDF document. Please click on "Personal Reference Form" above and print as many copies as needed.
  
  
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (sent by the Educational Testing Service).

No action on admission can be taken until all required documents are received. The Sociology Department cannot consider graduate applications until all Graduate School admission requirements have been met and the Graduate School has sent a referral to the Department.

The Department cannot waive or cover processing fees.

The Graduate School referral and all department application materials are reviewed by the Department Graduate Committee, which then makes recommendations on admission to the Department faculty. Notifications on admission decisions are issued by the Department Graduate Director in late May or early June.
