The Certificate in Criminology allows students to concentrate and specialize in classes that focus on issues of criminology, criminal justice, and law. It gives them special expertise and knowledge in these areas that should benefit them if they wish to enter the criminal justice field or attend graduate or law school. Furthermore, it is an established program that is known to employers throughout the community.

All majors are eligible to receive a Certificate in Criminology. Students must be matriculated (degree-seeking) at the University of Utah. This is one of the few official ways students can concentrate in criminology or criminal justice at the University of Utah. Non-majors must declare it to the sociology undergraduate advisor prior to applying for graduation in order to receive the certificate. Students take six courses for the certificate. (see Criminology requirements).

While all majors can receive the Certificate in Criminology, there is an added benefit for being a Sociology major. All Criminology Certificate classes may double count for the major. Therefore, Sociology majors working on the certificate can do so within the 49 hours required for the major in Sociology.

Upon graduation the Certificate in Criminology is sent to the student along with her or his diploma. It cannot be conferred prior to a student's graduation but a student can return after his or her graduation to finish Criminology requirements.
